Rehabbing a Fixer Upper Dollhouse (Part 2)

Luna’s house continues to come along nicely. My kids picked out a light blue-gray for the exterior paint.

I’m using this classic, tile-look flooring from Hobby Lobby in the kitchen (link).

I decided to cover the other floors in wood. I used coffee stirrers (link) and cut them with miter sheers (link). I got guidance and inspiration for the process from YouTube tutorials, including from Cath @ TheSquaretoSpare (link) and Sharon Ojala @ Where the Gnomes Live (link to tutorial). I thought about using veneer and my Cricut maker, but it would not be as cost-effective.

Removing the carpet was a multi-week challenge involving solvents in the backyard. Eventually I gave up despite some patches remaining and so the floors are not completely even. To address that, I made a template for the floors out of poster board and laid the coffee stirrers out on that. I used Aleene’s tacky glue (link) and then sanded with my sanding sponges (link and link). The result is not perfectly even, but I think it looks pretty realistic.

I haven’t decided how dark to stain them yet, but will test out some stains on samples to see how they look.

To get a smoother surface on the roof after the shingle removal, I adhered 1/16″ thick plywood sheets (link) with Liquid Nails (link). To cut the right sizes for the edge pieces, I used my new proxxon table saw (link). It is easy to use and a great addition to the workshop.

Next steps are to figure out the roof color and whether to use shingles or something else. I also would like to add some windows on the sides of the house.
