“Why is dollhouse furniture so expensive?”

We like to feature money-saving tips for aspiring miniaturists, and we consider this to be a hobby where the costs of entry can be as low as you like. But on the flip side, we often hear this question: “why is dollhouse furniture so expensive?”

Here’s our view:

  • Quality craftsmanship takes time. As with full scale furniture, anything handmade is going to cost more than a mass-produced item to compensate for the maker’s time. And getting those tiny details right does take time: cleaning off excess glue, sanding for a smooth surface, using a wood conditioner before staining, finishing with a sealant.
  • Scale materials can be expensive. Think about an item like this miniature cabinet: link. Something is off. It looks like a kid’s toy, not a scale reproduction of a full size furniture item. The issue with the cabinet is that the scale is not right. A thicker wood is being used than would be the correct scale for the cabinet. But very thin pieces of wood are costly and breakable.
  • Our expectations as consumers are miscalibrated. We expect that something smaller should cost less because it uses less material, but materials aren’t the only factor in cost. For example, the cost difference between a couch and an armchair isn’t proportional. If a couch seats three people and a chair only one, we might expect the cost to be about 1/3 for the chair. But it’s not.
  • Ultra-low cost goods produced abroad also affect our expectations. On Temu, for example, a lot of inexpensive miniatures are available. I have not purchased any, but I have generally not heard great things about the quality and whether the described scale is accurate. But as long as we can see very inexpensive items popping up in our searches, it will affect our perception of whether more expensive items are “worth it.”

These are the main factors that I think influence our perception that dollhouse furniture is “expensive.” What do you think? What factors did I miss?
