The steeply pitched roof of the A-frame cabin is its star feature, so I decided that shingles were important. I bought these on sale when miniatures.com was closing (don’t worry–they’re back open again thanks to an acquisition!).
But one bag of 1,000 only got me part of the way through the first side of the roof, so I bought a few more bags.
It’s slow going, but my kiddos kept me company. We have been watching the Best in Miniature competition series on YouTube. It has gotten them more inspired to make miniatures, too.
I cut some ski shapes out of 1/8″ thick maple planks (link) on my laser cutter and gave the kids acrylic paint pens to decorate with (link). The results are really fun and will add some tumble and jumble to the cabin.
A fire pit is another essential for the large deck of the ski cabin. OK, maybe we wouldn’t actually have a fire on a wooden deck IRL, but there are no fire safety issues in my imagination. I saved some crating from a large purchase a year or so ago, and ripped tiny pieces for the individual stones.
For the body of the fire pit, I cut some circles out of shipping boxes and glued them together.
I stained the shingles to give it a darker look.
